Memory / measurement wall. Not enough spaced practice. The SRS is functioning normally. Continue normal practice. The deck is working.

Aversion wall. Relational: repeated failure exposure has activated failure-avoidance. More practice compounds the problem. Pause new content. Drop to maintenance. Do NOT push harder. Stage resumption.

On misses

  • Declarative framing, not evaluative questions. "Hm, let’s look at this one on its own" — not "what happened there?"
  • Neutral affect. He reads a sigh or visible disappointment as criticism (CDI-2 self-report 96th percentile — measured, not inferred).
  • One micro-step, then move to a success item. Never chain.

On effort

  • Process, not product. "You stayed with it" — not "good job getting it right."
  • No over-reassurance. Repeating reassurance when he loops on a miss makes it worse. One calm declarative observation and move on.

On co-presence

  • Being calm and present in the room is an active intervention for his separation anxiety — not just supervision. It is therapeutic regardless of how the session goes.

On humor

  • Tone is fine. Don’t depend on a joke landing. Social-pragmatic reasoning is his relative verbal dip (Comprehension subtest 10 / Average). Structure and predictability carry more weight than humor.

On the two walls

  • Memory wall (practice gap): the deck handles it. Keep going.
  • Aversion wall (relational): pause, don’t push. The signal is refusal, flat affect, or shutdown — not a wrong answer.
